Slayaway Camp 2: Netflix & Kill

Role: Lead UI/UX Designer & 2D Artist
Studio: Blue Wizard Digital
Platform: Mobile → PC / Console
Release Timeline: 2023–2024

Project Overview

Slayaway Camp 2: Netflix & Kill is a darkly humorous, puzzle-strategy game inspired by 80s horror movies. For this sequel, the team adopted a streaming service theme, presenting each level as a “movie” within a fake, Netflix-style interface. As the sole UI/UX designer and 2D artist, I was responsible for the entire front-end experience, from layout systems and art direction to usability across multiple platforms.

Design Goals

  1. Streaming-Inspired Aesthetic: Mimic the UI of popular streaming platforms while adapting it for mobile and interactive game needs.

  2. Satirical Visual Identity: Use custom “box art” to humorously spoof horror subgenres.

  3. Touch-First UX: Build intuitive swipe and tap gestures for mobile.

  4. Cross-Platform Adaptation: Rework the interface for PC/controller usability and horizontal displays for console.

  5. Performance & Clarity: Ensure all visuals were readable and performant across devices and aspect ratios.

UI Modeled After Streaming Platforms

Challenge:
Emulate the familiarity and usability of a streaming service UI while supporting game-first interactions, not just passive browsing.

Solution:

  • Designed a scrollable tile system reminiscent of Netflix rows, where each “movie” acts as a playable puzzle level.

  • Adapted streaming UI conventions—like star visuals—not as ratings, but as in-game challenge indicators, blending parody with purpose.

  • Built a responsive layout system that scaled fluidly across phone sizes, ensuring thumb-friendly access to all key functions.

Custom Title Cards for Every Movie

Challenge:
Visually communicate a wide range of horror subgenres with humor and variety—within a limited resolution and file size budget.

Solution:

  • Personally illustrated every box cover thumbnail and created custom wordmarks for the in-game movies.

  • Ensured every image was visually legible at small sizes while maintaining personality and genre parody.

  • Unified them all under a fictional in-game streaming brand, giving the game a cohesive yet flexible identity.

Adapting for PC & Console

Challenge:
After launching the mobile version, we had to bring Slayaway Camp 2 to PC and console—a complete shift in aspect ratio, input method, and viewing distance.

Solution:

  • Rebuilt the UI for widescreen presentation, transitioning from vertical mobile stacks to horizontal screen-filling carousels.

  • Redesigned all interactive elements to support D-pad and analog stick navigation, with clearly defined focus states and snap movement between elements.

  • Refactored menus and modals for TV readability—increased font sizes, button spacing

  • Streamlined redundant inputs and clarified selection states to reduce UX friction for controller users.

Outcome

Slayaway Camp 2 successfully delivered a stylized, satirical, and responsive UI across platforms. The streaming-inspired layout added humor and novelty to level selection, while the polished cross-platform adaptation enabled the game to feel natural on mobile, PC, and consoles. My 2D box art helped define the tone and personality of the entire experience, reinforcing the game’s signature style and parody voice.
